PRESS CONFERENCE: Gender equality in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

WHAT: Press conference on gender equality in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, with a focus on a stand-alone gender equality target (Target 22) proposed by Costa Rica. This target was later supported by the Group of Latin and American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC), as well as by Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Benin, Cameroon, and the United Republic of Tanzania at the Third Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (OEWG-3) in Geneva, Switzerland. It is also currently gaining more support at the ongoing OEWG-4 in Nairobi, Kenya.

WHO: Women’s Caucus - UN Convention on Biological Diversity spearheads this press conference.

Supporters from different organizations will be sharing their insights on gender equality in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (GBF). The list of speakers as of this writing are:

Women4Biodiversity → Mrinalini Rai, Director

UN Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) → Benjamin Schachter, Human Rights Officer and Environment Team Leader

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) → Cristina Eghenter, Global Governance Policy Coordinator

ICCA Consortium → Carolina Rodriguez, International Policy Regional Focal Point (also a member of International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity)

Convention on Biological Diversity Alliance (CBDA) → Ana di Pangracio, member

Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) → Speaker TBA

WHEN: 24 June 2022 | 11 am - 12 noon, Nairobi time

WHERE: CF Room 7, UN Complex

WHY: To raise awareness on the importance of gender equality in the post-2020 GBF. A stand-alone gender equality target, Target 22, will particularly anchor gender equality in all biodiversity-related planning, policies and implementation. It would ensure that the post-2020 Gender Plan of Action is implemented and drive action towards gender priorities, funding for gender-responsive biodiversity action, and the inclusion of gender considerations in planning processes like National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans.
